  • EV Fasteners for Batteries

    Posted in Industry 4.0, Innovation on Feb 17, 2023

    EV-Batteries-Blog-Image.jpeg

    Alongside an estimated 6 million EV car shipments by the end of 2022, manufacturers find themselves tasked with developing ever-evolving battery technology. As range, heat and lightweighting concerns still pervade the market, manufacturers are completely rethinking the structure, design and makeup of their batteries.

    As of this year, some companies have found ways to build EV fuel cells into the car’s frame itself. Aiming to increase range and decrease cost, revolutionising the structure of the battery saves space for more fuel cells and makes for a roomier interior for passengers.

    Other businesses are focusing on SSBs, or solid-state batteries. Seen as a safer and more efficient option than their lithium-ion counterparts, some EV manufacturers are aiming to produce their SSBs for market introduction within the next five years. Aside from more established companies, many EV startups are also revolutionising the market, with one business boasting the development of a battery that charges in just a few minutes.

    It’s well known that the production of EV batteries is expensive, but heat and lightweighting issues are also hindering these business’ product optimisation. Range anxiety is also still a problem, but the best solution isn’t necessarily creating a bigger battery. Leading to what is known in the industry as the ‘weight spiral’, creating a bigger battery would require bigger brakes, bigger wheels, and a stronger structure. EVs also tend to be much heavier than their petrol or diesel counterparts, which can negatively impact their emission levels through tyre wear and even impinge on the car’s safety.

    Internal and external heat can also have a very negative impact on battery performance. An EV’s driving range can decrease by 17% in hot weather, and up to 41% in cold weather. Not only this, but studies have shown that the use of electric vehicles in hot weather can significantly decrease battery health, diminishing its lifetime.

    Both these issues contribute to customers’ potential range anxiety, rendering them apprehensive about investing in an electric vehicle. It’s crucial, then, that battery manufacturers prioritise solutions to their heat and lightweighting issues.

    How Optimas can help

    For all EV manufacturers, it’s important to use the correct, high-quality C-Class components and fasteners. EV fasteners may only account for 1% of your project budget, but they can make up nearly 50% of your product’s parts, so it’s important you choose the right ones.

    Here at Optimas, not only do we have an industry-leading product range, but we’re experts in all things EV. We know that with greater electrification, comes a greater need for insulation. To avoid depleting battery performance, it’s crucial that manufacturers prioritise thermal insulation in the initial design stage to avoid both internal over-heating and damage done by external conditions.

    Here are just a few products from our range of EV fasteners and C-Class Components that are ideal for providing insulation and eliminating unwanted thermal conductivity:

    • Nylon Machine Screws
    • Double Ended Studs with Hex Collar and Black Xylan Insulation
    • Braided Sleeving
    • Heat Shrink Tubing
    • Gland Plates

    The smallest parts can also have the biggest impact on weight. Even down to EV fasteners, it’s important you prioritise using light-weight materials at every opportunity. Using materials like aluminium, magnesium and titanium can massively reduce the weight of an EV battery. Not only this, but changing the geometry of a fastener can reduce weight by as much as 35%. At Optimas, we have a team of global fastener engineers who can work with you to improve your product’s performance.

    To find out more about products, or to speak to one of our experts, you can do so here. Partner with us to optimise your products and meet demand.

  • LAMIERA 2023 AT FIERAMILANO RHO FROM 10 TO 13 MAY A GOOD TREND FOR THE APPLICATIONS TO EXHIBIT THE TRADE SHOW TO TAKE PLACE AGAIN IN ODD-NUMBERED YEARS

    Posted in Fairs and exhibitions, Fastener distribution, Fasteners manufacturers on Jan 09, 2023

    The collection of applications to exhibit is going on expeditiously for the next edition of LAMIERA, the international exhibition dedicated to sheet metal forming and cutting machines and related technologies, scheduled to take place at fieramilano Rho from 10 to 13 May 2023.

    Promoted by UCIMU-SISTEMI PER PRODURRE, the Italian machine tools, robots and automation systems manufacturers' association, and organised by CEU-CENTRO ESPOSIZIONI UCIMU, LAMIERA – the only trade show exclusively focused on the sector – will again take place in odd-numbered years.

    Considering the economic framework, which is still favourable despite some factors of uncertainty, LAMIERA is getting ready to receive positive feedback from the enterprises of the sector. Besides the foreign markets, they will have a very dynamic and receptive Italian market at their disposal, also thanks to the Government incentives in force until after 2023.

    After an extremely positive 2021, in the first six months of 2022, the Italian industry of the sector confirmed its growth trend, registering double-digit increases in the international trade data concerning the exchange of sheet metal forming and cutting machines.

    In particular, in the period January-June 2022, the world exports of sheet metal forming and cutting machine tools (laser, waterjet, plasma, etc.) reported a 12% upturn compared with the same period of 2021, totalling more than 8 billion euro. Worldwide imports also grew, by 16%, exceeding 6 billion euro. In this context, Italy highlighted highly satisfactory performances, confirming to be the second most important consumer market in the world in 2021 (latest available data).

    “Supported by the Government incentives 4.0, in effect for the whole year 2023 and afterwards - pointed out Alfredo Mariotti, general manager of UCIMU-SISTEMI PER PRODURRE - domestic demand will certainly reward the exhibitors participating in LAMIERA”.

    The organisation secretariat is observing a great attention to this event, given not only by the “habitués”, the usual exhibitors, representing all major segments in the repertoire, but also by new enterprises, as well as by companies that have decided to exhibit again at LAMIERA after years of absence.

    “Confirmations, new entries and returns - added Alfredo Mariotti – show how significant the interest is in this event, which, edition after edition, has been stabilising its position as the only trade fair of reference for the sector in Italy and improving its appeal even to foreign operators, thus strengthening its image worldwide”.

    Machines, systems, equipment for sheet metal processing and cutting, tubes, sections, wires, metal structural work, presses, dies and moulds, welding, surface treatments and finishing, parts, components, accessories, tooling, fastener materials, technical and industrial subcontracting are some of the “traditional” technologies on show.

    Besides the large offering of machinery, plants and equipment for sheet metal processing and cutting, tubes, sections, wires, metal structural work, the exhibition will focus on 6 technological themes that have an increasingly crucial impact on the sector today. FABBRICAFUTURA/FACTORY OF THE FUTURE, dedicated to software and technologies for connectivity, data management, automation, robotics and digital systems applied to sheet metal processing; SALDATECH, offering an overview of the wide and diversified world of welding, one of the most important sheet-metal joining technologies; FASTENER INDUSTRY, presenting a proposal of screws, bolts, fastening and clamping systems; WORLD OF HEAT AND SURFACE TREATMENTS, hosting machines, systems, accessories and consumables centred on pre- and post-production treatments, for ferrous and non-ferrous materials, offering a complete overview of this segment that is continuously developing; METROLOGY & TESTING, focused on testing, measuring and quality-control systems and machines, which are essential for production in this field; BLECH ITALY SERVICE, technical subcontracting and services for the industry of the sector.

    In addition, as usual, LAMIERA will propose a full programme of in-depth cultural, thematic meetings arranged by the organisers and the exhibitors. The meetings will be hosted at LAMIALAMIERA, a real arena that will be set up within one of the exhibition halls to facilitate a free participation of the present operators.

    The trade show will take place in partial conjunction with Made in Steel, the exhibition dedicated to the production chain of steel, which will be held in the halls next to those occupied by LAMIERA, thus enabling operators and journalists to visit the two separate but complementary events on one business trip.

  • VALVE WORLD EXPO finally returns - successful restart for the international industrial valves and fittings summit in Düsseldorf

    Posted in Fairs and exhibitions, Fasteners manufacturers on Dec 16, 2022

    Whether LNG terminals, gas storage facilities, wind turbines, pipelines or water pipelines - no industrial sector functions without the use of industrial valves and fittings.

    Therefore, after a four-year absence, the international players of these key technologies were looking forward to their VALVE WORLD EXPO 2022 at Düsseldorf Fairgrounds again.

    388 exhibitors from 29 countries presented concentrated technological power over three days in exhibition halls 1 and 3. Innovative machines, plants, components, systems and pumps were shown on a net area of 12,000 square metres.

    "After two years of online meetings, we are just happy to have direct contact with customers and interested parties again. A generally positive mood was noticeable and many discussion partners are very happy that the valve family was finally able to meet again in person”, said a pleased Peter Wegjan, Sales Manager Special Ball Valves (Petro-) Chemical, Plant Engineering at Hartmann Valves .

    Many premieres such as Messe Düsseldorf's sustainability campaign with its ecoMetals Trails, the EXPO Forum as a jampacked, two-day conference format, the presentation of the Valve Stars Awards and a rousing exhibitor party complemented the lively events in the exhibition halls.

    The parallel international Valve World Conference, which was again organised by KCI in 2022 with around 70 lectures, seminars and workshops, attracted around 400 delegates to the conference rooms in Hall 1. In 2022, VALVE WORLD EXPO again fulfilled its role as an impulse generator and international meeting platform for an entire industry. 2 50% of respondents stated they had found current trends and information here.

    "From metre-high ball valves to tiny microvalves - everything the industry has to offer in terms of innovations for current challenges could be seen and experienced in our exhibition halls”, said a delighted Bernd Jablonowski, Executive Director of Messe Düsseldorf.

    After a four-year break, well-attended exhibition halls demonstrated just how important personal exchange is to players in the industry. Experts from the oil and gas, chemical and petrochemical, power plant technology, marine and offshore, water and wastewater management, automotive, mechanical engineering, pharmaceutical and medical industries all gathered information in Düsseldorf, proving that both the trade fair offering and demand for it have struck a chord in the current climate.

    "In our industry, people value the direct discussion about innovations, new products and processes that only an in-person trade fair can offer. In my opinion, presence trade fairs will continue to maintain their fixed place in the mix of B2B communication," explained Thomas Weisschuh, Head of Product Management and Innovations AS-Schneider Group confirming the successful course of the trade fair and added: "For the European region, VALVE WORLD EXPO is an important leading trade fair for industrial valves. This is where our industry meets all the important decisionmakers under one roof to find out about the technologies of the future."

    On three days of the fair, international trade visitors from over 80 countries came to Düsseldorf - at 79%, the proportion of decisionmakers was very high. In addition to users of valves and fittings, fittings manufacturers and the fittings trade, energy supply companies also gathered information at the trade fair.

    A high visitor presence from overseas, in particular from India, the USA, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and 3 from some North African states, shaped the events in the exhibition halls alongside many European visitors. 94% of the respondents plan to come to Düsseldorf again in two years. VALVE WORLD EXPO and the accompanying conference will then take place from 3 to 5 December 2024.

    VMI: Productivity and Cost Reduction

    vmi_blog_header.jpg

    In a time of increasing supply chain instability and rising inflation, it’s crucial for businesses to reduce their spending and maximise efficiency. One way to do so is through the use of a VMI (Vendor Managed Inventory). The last few years have seen an increase in the popularity of VMIs, as businesses seek to reduce their number of suppliers and instead opt for streamlined and cost-effective organisation.

    As manufacturers ourselves, we’re constantly looking for improvements to our production process, so we understand the position our partners are in.

    What are the key benefits of Vendor Managed Inventory?

    A VMI ensures products are delivered to the right place at the right time through improved data visibility, resulting in improved productivity in addition to:

    Cost Reduction

    Current financial instability means that businesses are having to reassess their outgoings, and there are numerous financial benefits of using a VMI. Firstly, it reduces manpower needed by your business. In a supply chain, the parts themselves make up only 15% of the cost, while the human resources required to select, manage and process those parts cost 85%.

    In addition, using a VMI can simplify and reduce the cost of the ordering process, all while reducing your TCO (Total Cost of Ownership), as the vendor assumes the cost and associated risk of managing your supply chain. Partnering with a single vendor also diminishes possible excess spending by collating your parts into a single, automated order.

    Streamlined Production

    The current political climate is buckling global supply chains, so it’s more important than ever for businesses to control their stock levels and avoid waste. VMIs use various advanced technologies to automate both simple and complex processes, removing costly and unnecessary steps.

    A VMI service provider can also source products for you, from a diverse range of suppliers. Some experts suggest that the cost for a business to add in just ten extra suppliers every five years is more than $1 million, but a VMI handles that for you. Each part is then ordered, delivered, stored and replenished automatically, as and when you need it.

    Types of VMIs at Optimas

    Optimas has numerous VMI solutions for your business. Our systems use the latest technology to automate inventory replenishment, ensuring productivity and saving you money.

    JIT Systems

    Our JIT systems provide a secure, cloud-based platform that processes orders from any OptiTech VMI solution and allows you to access customised, real-time reports for greater transparency into your fastener inventory and consumption data.

    OptiScale

    OptiScale uses the latest weighing technology to measure your inventory status in real-time, down to the part level quality in a bin. Embedded sensors monitor the weight capacity, automatically triggering orders based on pre-defined min/max levels and reorder/unit pack sizes. Stock levels can be accessed 24/7, and OptiScale can be configured into a bin, shelf or container.

    OptiRack

    OptiRack uses advanced RFID (radio-frequency identification) technology to automate inventory replenishment. When an empty bin is placed on an RFID mat on the rack shelf, it detects the chip embedded in the bin label, and wirelessly triggers an order. OptiRack can be set up in any designated area, whether it be a supermarket, area rack or at the point of use.

    OptiZone

    OptiZone uses advanced RFID technology to automate inventory replenishment. An RFID antenna points to a designated area, a pallet, cage, gaylord container or bulk area. When an empty bin is placed in that area, the antenna detects the RFID chip embedded in the bin label and then wirelessly triggers an order.

    OptiDrop

    OptiDrop uses RFID technology to automate inventory replenishment, but does so by scanning a unique card with an RFID embedded chip in a bin. When the bin is empty or low, simply remove the card and replace it inside the OptiDrop box to wirelessly trigger an order. OptiDrop can be placed at any location inside the plant.

    OptiBeam

    OptiBeam uses the latest scanning and barcode technology for easy inventory replenishment. Our cellular-enabled scanners allow both Optimas the customer to check inventory levels and send orders instantly. The scanner includes auditing software so you can search parts, validate bin location and set optimal reorder/unit pack sizes.

    Here at Optimas, we’re dedicated to efficient inventory management, and we’d be as invested in your success as you are. To find out more about our VMI solutions, or to speak to one of our experts, you can do so here. Consider working with us to lower your costs and streamline your supply chain.

    Posted in Fasteners manufacturers, Industry 4.0, Innovation on Aug 25, 2022

    Rexlen Corporation, which specializes in automotive, electronics, and mechanical fastener has recently taken another leap forward to a new industry sector.

    The recently released and patented “V-Tex Thread for Wood” (V-Tex) is Rexlen’s official entry announcement into the household & DIY markets.

    Distinctive Structure Featuring Excellent Functions

    SCREW MOD.png

    “V-Tex” wood screws offer three kinds of minor diameters, which (sorted by value from large to small) are cutting ribs, shank, and chip recesses. After its sharp-point drill drills into the material, the cutting ribs will twist off fibers to create a larger hole diameter and the special cutting teeth on threads will cut off wood fibers.

    Then, the chip recesses offer extra space for dust to reduce drilling resistance, facilitating the assembly/engagement/fastening of wood materials and revealing excellent functionality. “V-Tex” is a type of screw for hard wood featuring both cutting and quick drilling and fastening.

    3 Major Features of “V-Tex”

    THREAD.jpg

    • Low Driving Torque In a test using European hard wood, “V-Tex” features the driving torque lower than the other brands, giving users more labor-saving fastening experience.

    • Low Drilling Time Fastening can be completed within 0.72 second, which is almost on pair with other European leading brands in the same test. This will save a lot of drilling time and enhance work efficiency for users.

    • Strong Pull-Out Value Be it the pull-out force test or the tensile strength test, V-Tex wood screws have proven to function to the same levels as those of products made by other European leading manufacturers. After fastening is completed, it won’t become loose easily. It is not only easy to use, but can also be applied to maximize the work efficiency.

  • How to prevent premature fastener failures with heat treatment

    Posted in Fasteners manufacturers, Industry 4.0, Innovation, Manufacturing technology on May 18, 2022

    yg51b2go.bmp

    Quality control of safety-critical parts

    Heat treatment is very important for automotive safety fasteners. It’s a delicate process which could be monitored by the modern Industry 4.0 technologies but still requires a final 100% analysis of each part before the shipment, in order to fulfill the automotive supply chain requirements.

    Heat Treatment Control is surely a kind of NDT (Non Destructive Testing) inspection on which Dimac invested important R&D energies during the past 3 years, reaching nowadays outstanding performances in terms of sorting rate and inspection accuracy.

    Partnering with the most important NDT device manufacturers for the HT detection, Dimac has renewed all the machines of the range with state of the art NDT Stations capable to perform this crucial control with the highest accuracy and productivity rate.

    The eddy current station scans the part by mean of 24 different frequencies to detect any minimum variation of the material structure, as well as to detect plating and surface coating problems in order to prevent any premature fastener failures.

    This type of control is mandatory for safety-critical parts belonging to the Power Train or to the brake system, or any application where fasteners are subject to constant vibration or exposed to corrosion.

    The man-machine interface of the Dimac application for HT detection is really user-friendly. The setup is intuitive, thanks to the multi frequency testing process made simple by a wizard procedure which easily recognizes and sort out any fastener with deviations from the expected signal envelope.

    A clear saving of time and costs

    The brand new generation glass rotary table machine Dimac mcv6 is the model getting more benefits – together with the best seller model mcv5 – from the application of the HT NDT technology in terms of savings of time and costs. The innovative eddy current station allows to sort a wide range of complex parts by hardness classes with high output rates.

    The HT station of the Dimac mcv5 and mcv6 uses two state of the art eddy current coil-probes: a reference probe at the operator’s workplace and a testing probe which is positioned above the glass table. The system provides instant results while running, allowing to process up to 300 parts/minute.

    The setup procedure is based on a teach-in process and requires boundary OK and NOK samples available at the operator’s place.

    The setup sequence could be summarized as follows:

    • the operator puts one OK sample into the reference coil-probe;
    • the eddy current device detects the magnetic permeability of that OK sample;
    • the operator enables the wizard procedure to record the reference data from the reference-coil probe;
    • the batch of parts to be sorted can be put in the feeding system;
    • the operator runs the sorting of a first quantity of 20÷30 pieces to teach-in the response of the testing-coil, then the machine is stopped;
    • the eddy current device compares the OK part reference data with the signal generated by the passage of the 30 pieces below the testing coil;
    • the wizard procedure and its algorithm calculate the envelope of the taught-in signals and sets automatically the sorting threshold values;
    • nothing else to do for the operator, he just has to press the START CYCLE button and run the sorting machine;

    however, the system allows the operator to adjust the threshold and improve the accuracy of the setup in case of need.

    The new concept cuts the time and costs of the 100% sorting process by making the operators’ tasks far more efficient, as well as by expediting the quality management job.
