    FM approval for EJOT flat roof products

    19.05.2022, EJOT SE & Co. KG – Market Unit Construction

    A wide range of EJOT flat roof fasteners has been tested and approved for use by the American FM Approvals testing institute in combination with various types of roofing membranes. The necessary tests for this approval essentially correspond to the European approval ETA and confirm the safety, reliability and durability of the EJOT flat roof fasteners. The FM approval is a further step for the worldwide use of the products.

    The background: In Europe, fasteners are usually tested on the basis of an EEAS and thus approved for use with all roofing membranes. However, the American FM Approvals testing institute, which is connected to the global insurance company FM Global, tests the entire system consisting of fastener, substructure, insulation material and roof sheet in an individual test. A comprehensive series of tests with various fastener/roofing membrane combinations has now been approved by FM Approvals.

    An increasing number of investors and building owners in Europe are demanding the American quality certificate (FM Approvals Standard 4470). FM approval can be relevant for construction projects of internationally operating companies. These are already required in the tender in order to comply with FM Global's insurance standards.

    A list of all approved products is available from the central Roofnav database (www.roofnav.com).

  • How to prevent premature fastener failures with heat treatment

    Posted in Fasteners manufacturers, Industry 4.0, Innovation, Manufacturing technology on May 18, 2022

    yg51b2go.bmp

    Quality control of safety-critical parts

    Heat treatment is very important for automotive safety fasteners. It’s a delicate process which could be monitored by the modern Industry 4.0 technologies but still requires a final 100% analysis of each part before the shipment, in order to fulfill the automotive supply chain requirements.

    Heat Treatment Control is surely a kind of NDT (Non Destructive Testing) inspection on which Dimac invested important R&D energies during the past 3 years, reaching nowadays outstanding performances in terms of sorting rate and inspection accuracy.

    Partnering with the most important NDT device manufacturers for the HT detection, Dimac has renewed all the machines of the range with state of the art NDT Stations capable to perform this crucial control with the highest accuracy and productivity rate.

    The eddy current station scans the part by mean of 24 different frequencies to detect any minimum variation of the material structure, as well as to detect plating and surface coating problems in order to prevent any premature fastener failures.

    This type of control is mandatory for safety-critical parts belonging to the Power Train or to the brake system, or any application where fasteners are subject to constant vibration or exposed to corrosion.

    The man-machine interface of the Dimac application for HT detection is really user-friendly. The setup is intuitive, thanks to the multi frequency testing process made simple by a wizard procedure which easily recognizes and sort out any fastener with deviations from the expected signal envelope.

    A clear saving of time and costs

    The brand new generation glass rotary table machine Dimac mcv6 is the model getting more benefits – together with the best seller model mcv5 – from the application of the HT NDT technology in terms of savings of time and costs. The innovative eddy current station allows to sort a wide range of complex parts by hardness classes with high output rates.

    The HT station of the Dimac mcv5 and mcv6 uses two state of the art eddy current coil-probes: a reference probe at the operator’s workplace and a testing probe which is positioned above the glass table. The system provides instant results while running, allowing to process up to 300 parts/minute.

    The setup procedure is based on a teach-in process and requires boundary OK and NOK samples available at the operator’s place.

    The setup sequence could be summarized as follows:

    • the operator puts one OK sample into the reference coil-probe;
    • the eddy current device detects the magnetic permeability of that OK sample;
    • the operator enables the wizard procedure to record the reference data from the reference-coil probe;
    • the batch of parts to be sorted can be put in the feeding system;
    • the operator runs the sorting of a first quantity of 20÷30 pieces to teach-in the response of the testing-coil, then the machine is stopped;
    • the eddy current device compares the OK part reference data with the signal generated by the passage of the 30 pieces below the testing coil;
    • the wizard procedure and its algorithm calculate the envelope of the taught-in signals and sets automatically the sorting threshold values;
    • nothing else to do for the operator, he just has to press the START CYCLE button and run the sorting machine;

    however, the system allows the operator to adjust the threshold and improve the accuracy of the setup in case of need.

    The new concept cuts the time and costs of the 100% sorting process by making the operators’ tasks far more efficient, as well as by expediting the quality management job.

  • European Commission imposes anti-dumping measures on fasteners from China

    Posted in Fastener distribution, Fasteners manufacturers on Mar 07, 2022

    Today the European Commission published a regulation imposing anti-dumping duties on certain iron or steel fasteners imported from China. Duties have been set between 22.1% and 86.5%. The measures follow an investigation which showed the presence of significant dumping on the market, with Chinese imports heavily undercutting European sales prices and therefore injuring the European fasteners industry.

    Fasteners are essential elements for a vast variety of industries, from simple screws in “do-it-yourself” kits to high-end applications in the car, aviation and electrical industries. The EU fasteners industry is worth €3.2 billion, with one tenth imported from China. EU producers of fasteners, who are mostly SMEs, employ more than 20,000 people across Europe in countries such as Italy, France, Germany, Poland, Croatia, Sweden and Spain.

    The anti-dumping measures imposed today will re-establish a level playing field by taking away the unfair competition caused by the price dumping, allowing EU producers of fasteners to compete in the EU market on an equal footing with the imported fasteners. This will ensure that there is continued and healthy production in the EU of fasteners of all ranges, including those used in high tech sectors like the automotive and car industries.

    The anti-dumping measures imposed today will have a limited impact on EU users of fasteners. For the vast majority, fasteners represent only a minor part of the total cost of their final product. A shortage of fasteners is also not expected following the introduction of measures, since the EU industry has a large spare production capacity.

  • EISENWARENMESSE – INTERNATIONAL HARDWARE FAIR COLOGNE moved to September 2022

    Posted in Fairs and exhibitions, Fastener distribution, Fastener suppliers, Fasteners manufacturers on Jan 24, 2022

    One-time postponement to the fall will ensure maximum participation from exhibitors and visitors including vital Asian sales and manufacturing markets “As the world’s leading trade fair for the hardware industry, our aim is to provide a comprehensive overview of the global market and bring together suppliers and buyers from all over the world. With this in mind, we together with the associations and exhibitors have decided to hold the EISENWARENMESSE – INTERNATIONAL HARDWARE FAIR COLOGNE from 25 to 28 September 2022, instead of the originally scheduled dates of 6 to 9 March 2022,” announced Chief Operating Officer of Koelnmesse, Oliver Frese, in Cologne today.

    Since the pandemic situation continues to develop dynamically worldwide and strict travel restrictions are expected in March, especially for important Asian overseas markets, this scenario is a win-win for everyone: Exhibitors can plan for September with a longer lead time and look forward to the usual international audience, including from Asia. Visitors can look forward to a renowned group of participants and an attractive event programme shaped by a high number of exhibiting companies.

    “With the Anuga Food Fair and International Dental Show (IDS) in the fall, we proved that trade fairs with Koelnmesse’s hygiene and safety concept are once again possible at an international level and can be carried out safely for everyone. Furthermore, our customers were very pleased with the business activities at these events,” pointed out Oliver Frese. “However, certain industry-specific conditions must be in place in order to fully leverage the power of personal exchange at an international trade show. In the case of EISENWARENMESSE – INTERNATIONAL HARDWARE FAIR COLOGNE, this power will be significantly greater in September thanks to the participation of the Asian market.”

    The Asian manufacturing and sales market plays an important role in the hardware industry. Many Asian countries have again identified Germany and large parts of Europe as a risk area due to the generally high incidence figures, and travelling from these countries will be difficult well until spring. Based on the experience from 2021 and as the global vaccination campaign progresses, the situation should look completely different in September 2022.

    The decision to postpone the EISENWARENMESSE – INTERNATIONAL HARDWARE FAIR COLOGNE was therefore made independently of the situation of other spring trade fairs in Koelnmesse’s portfolio, which have considerably different exhibitor and visitor structures in some cases.

    Full support from the industry

    “The industry needs a strong EISENWARENMESSE – INTERNATIONAL HARDWARE FAIR to build long-term success,” commented Wolfgang J. Kirchhoff, Chairman of the Advisory Board and Managing Director of Witte Tools. “If the conditions for this are better in September than in March, then postponing the date is the only logical and correct decision for the industry and the trade fair.”

    "The German tool industry is strongly export-oriented. We therefore need an internationally widely attended INTERNATIONAL HARDWARE FAIR and we are confident that we will achieve this goal with the postponement,” said Managing Director of the German association of tool manufacturers (FWI) Stefan Horst regarding the postponement.

    "First things first: we can continue to look forward to an INTERNATIONAL HARDWARE FAIR in 2022 and thus to an important instrument to prepare for the future in these turbulent times together as an industry. The postponement will enable all exhibiting companies to devote their full attention to the preparations for the fair after what is expected to be a hard winter," said Norbert Lindemann, Managing Director of Herstellerverband Haus & Garten e.V. (German Association of Home & Garden Manufacturers).

    “Trade fairs are the lifeline of our international business activities and play an immense role in helping the pandemic-battered global economy get back on its feet. The EISENWARENMESSE – INTERNATIONAL HARDWARE FAIR is one of the events that we always recommend our members attend. The fact that we will have to wait to see each other in Cologne again in no way diminishes the anticipation,” says John Herbert, General Secretary of the European DIY Retail Association/Global Home Improvement Network (EDRA/GHIN) on behalf of the international DIY markets.

    March event is not a blueprint

    Planned for a long time and ready to go – top-class informative special exhibitions and theme platforms such as the eCommerce area featuring innovative, disruptive solutions and strategies for retailers in the areas of payment, shop systems, ERP, hosting, search engine optimisation and multichannel. The digital extension EISENWARENMESSE @home will be available in September also. “Nevertheless, we do not want to just take the plans for March and use them for September: The world simply changes too quickly,” said Matthias Becker, Director of EISENWARENMESSE – INTERNATIONAL HARDWARE FAIR COLOGNE. “We will look at the current hot topics in the industry and adapt the plans accordingly.” Koelnmesse – industry trade fairs for the hardware sector: As a top international trade fair organiser, Koelnmesse is the global market leader in organising events for the hardware/ironware segment. It hosts the leading international event EISENWARENMESSE – International Hardware Fair Cologne at its trade fair grounds in Cologne, where Asia-Pacific Sourcing also showcases products, innovations and trends for homes and gardens from the Far East. In addition to the events at its Cologne headquarters, Koelnmesse is expanding its portfolio internationally in key markets: China International Hardware Show (CIHS) in Shanghai and Hardware Forum Italy in Milan are bespoke events and leading regional trade fairs. They create the foundation for sustainable, international business for their participants and bring together supply and demand within the sector with a carefully targeted approach.

  • Bulten signs FSP contract with clear sustainable objectives

    Posted in Fasteners manufacturers, Industry 4.0, Sustainability on Jan 21, 2022

    Bulten has signed an FSP (Full Service Provider) contract regarding the supply of fasteners to a new European vehicle program for a global automotive manufacturer, which also is an existing customer of the company. The contract value is approximately SEK 100 million annually at full capacity.

    One decisive reason why Bulten was awarded the contract is the company’s distinct sustainability offer. Besides deliveries of fasteners, the contract also entails a close collaboration between the parties to reduce environmental impact in the value chain. This means Bulten will commit to a number of environmental targets during the contract period, with the aim of supporting the automotive manufacturer’s overall sustainability objectives. The targets will be set jointly by both parties and monitored on a regular basis.

    “Of course we are delighted to once again be appointed FSP supplier to an existing customer. It shows that our performance is valued. However, I am particularly proud that we are awarded business based on sustainability, and that we now have a tangible collaboration with a customer to reduce environmental impact. It is a true milestone, and we know that sustainability will be increasingly important to our customers when they choose suppliers,” says Anders Nyström, President and CEO of Bulten.

    Deliveries are expected to begin in the third quarter of 2023, and to reach full capacity in 2025. The new European vehicle program has an expected lifecycle of ten years.

  • BUMAX provides reliable stainless steel fastener solution for Swiss high-performance A-Cat catamaran rudder

    Posted in Fasteners manufacturers, Industry 4.0, Innovation on Dec 20, 2021

    Swiss ship builder Scheurer Bootswerft AG has opted for screws from Swedish specialist fastener maker BUMAX to fix its high-performance catamaran rudders where standard fasteners would simply fail.

    BUMAX A-cat.jpg

    High-strength BUMAX 109 screws are being used to fasten the A-Cat catamaran rudders constructed by Scheurer Bootswerft. An A-Cat catamaran has two rudders, and each Scheurer Bootswerft rudder is secured with two BUMAX 109 screws.

    BUMAX 109 fasteners have a high molybdenum content which, coupled with unique BUMAX manufacturing processes and sourcing of the highest quality European raw material, makes it the strongest A4 fastener on the market. It offers high corrosion resistance and strength in demanding applications.

    The BUMAX 109 is used for water jets, sub-sea equipment, pumps, valves, wind turbines, high-pressure equipment, nuclear plants, submarines, particle accelerators and many other applications where commodity A4 fasteners are inadequate. They provide greater safety and will last significantly longer than standard fasteners. “We originally used standard stainless steel A4 screws to fasten the rudders, but as the rudders come under very high tension when turning through the water at speed, we found that these screws were bending and eventually breaking,” said Aron Steinmann, CEO at Scheurer Bootswerft. “Even a small bend in these fasteners can alter the angle of the rudder, which reduces performance. Importantly, the high-strength BUMAX screws can cope with this high tension to keep the rudder at the correct angle while maintaining corrosion resistance in saltwater environments.”

    Scheurer Bootswerft has also found that BUMAX fasteners can cope with sudden impacts, for example when the rudder hits debris in the water.

    “The screws fastening the rudder are a simple but essential part of the catamaran as their failure can be the difference between winning or losing a race,” said Steinmann. “They simply cannot be allowed to fail.”

    BUMAX is a Swedish manufacturer of premium stainless steel fasteners located in the Swedish “steel belt”. BUMAX is known as the strongest stainless steel bolt in the world – providing optimal safety and reliability to fasteners in the most demanding of applications.

    Scheurer Bootswerft AG is a specialist ship builder based in Nidau, northwest Switzerland. The company has built A-Cat catamaran for regatta around the world for around 40 years. The A-Cat sailing class, often abbreviated to A-Cat, is a development class sailing catamaran for singlehanded racing.
