  • BUMAX selected for demanding ultrasonic welding application

Posted in Fasteners manufacturers, Industry 4.0 on Jul 24, 2023

Swedish premium fastener manufacturer BUMAX has been selected to provide fasteners to be used in machines for ultrasonic metal welding. The client is Schunk Sonosystems, a global leading specialist in the field of ultrasonic metal welding.

German specialist machine maker Schunk Sonosystems has decided to use BUMAX DX 129 screws for all its ultrasonic welding flexure sonotrode products to further improve quality and reliability. The machines are mainly used in the automobile industry.

Standard steel bolts simply cannot cope with the extreme pulling and bending forces of ultrasonic vibration, so we had to find a bolt that does,” said Stefan Mueller, Head of R&D at Schunk Sonosystems. “Of all the screws we tested, only BUMAX met all our needs. Not only are BUMAX consistent in how they perform and do not break, they last the lifetime of the sonotrode without problem, are not creating abrasion dust on the screw head and do not require rust protection.”

    Extreme levels of vibration

Schunk Sonosystems is a global leader in developing and building machines for ultrasonic metal welding – such as their industry-leading flexure sonotrode. Their machines include a sonotrode or welding tip that transfers vibrational energy to the workpiece. Up to two high-strength bolts are required to fix the sonotrode, which is subject to extreme levels of vibration due to the very high frequency used in ultrasonic welding.

Ultrasonic welding is a solid-state welding process that uses ultrasonic vibrations to weld pieces of metal together. The metals are welded together by heat generated by friction when applying high-frequency ultrasonic vibrational energy.

    ultrasonic welding machine2.png

The BUMAX DX 129 (Duplex stainless steel) offers very high tensile strengths of min. 1,200 MPa and excellent fatigue resistance properties. It deals successfully with the with extreme forces during the ultrasonic welding process, such as 20,000 vibrations per second.

    Excellent fatigue strength

The high fatigue strength that BUMAX screws offer is crucial to their ability to withstand a high number of cycles without fracture. All BUMAX bolts are made with the highest quality European steel, and its advanced manufacturing processes result in the further enhancement of the material’s fatigue resistance properties.

Fatigue fracture often begins with a stress concentration such as inclusions, slags or surface defects. The high-quality raw materials BUMAX uses, together with the best metallurgical processes and good surface properties, guarantee excellent fatigue strength. BUMAX also uses rolled threads rather than cut threads, which further increases fatigue resistance.

One of the largest automotive bolt manufacturers in India recently added a VisionLab 3D Fastener Gauging System from General Inspection, LLC to streamline their first part inspection process.

VisionLab uses General Inspection's patented 3D gauging technology to provide complete part dimensional layouts in less than 5 seconds. The machine can perform 360⁰ dimensional inspection with detailed data reporting, plus options to provide 360⁰ visual defect detection, end view inspection, and measure recess depth and recess concentricity.

    VisionLab-150 Aero FL web.jpg

The bolt manufacturer’s goal was to reduce inspection time, improve quality, and cut down on calibration costs by replacing multiple manual gauges, such as micrometers, calipers, and optical comparators, which are inherently subject to human error. Visionlab completes first-piece inspections in a fraction of the time allowing employees to concentrate on production tasks instead of manually measuring parts.

    shutterstock_566269564.jpg

Production has significantly increased; errors have been eliminated and the company is able to measure much more frequently. All dimensions: including lengths, diameters, radii, angles, and GD&T features are measured and displayed with a pass/fail indication. Custom data reports are created and saved as CSV or Excel files, but in this case the customer is utilizing the “MySequel” built in server to connect directly to their SPC program. This saves time and money plus drastically improves quality by accurately measuring parts within two microns. Part feature tolerances are assigned with the appropriate part number and stored in memory for quick recall.

The VisionLab system is a versatile, accurate and fast inspection machine capable of handling a wide range of applications. To find out what it can do for your company, please email us at info@generalinspection.com to set up a free web demonstration.

  • The ideal cast for a supporting role in timber construction

Posted in Fasteners manufacturers, Industry 4.0, Innovation on Jun 05, 2023

    fischer’s Power-Full II full-thread screw

    fischer-PowerFull-II_1.jpg

The fischer Group of Companies is launching the latest generation of Power-Full II full-thread screws. These wood screws are ideal for permanently and securely connecting or reinforcing supporting wood constructions. They also offer the advantage of easy and efficient installation as an economical pro solution for challenging fastening requirements in timber construction. Main and secondary beam connections, false beam edges, shear tension bracings or shear connections - PowerFull II always proves to be the ideal choice whenever timber connections or reinforcements are subjected to particularly high requirements. The latest generation of fischer wood screws has a European Technical Assessment (ETA-21/0751) that already covers several updates and the state of the art of the future Eurocode 5 on the design and construction of timber structures. The new ETA of fischer’s full-thread screws is more user-friendly than the previous version, with significantly more comprehensive and structured content.

Compared to its renowned predecessor, fischer has optimised its full-thread screw even further. For instance, as an alternative to the effective screw-in depth of the screw thread, this screw-in depth can be applied without considering the length of the screw tip by calculation, but with a significantly increased pullout parameter. This allows the pullout load capacity or tensile strength to be increased by up to 60%.

Screw tip and thread geometry make installation easier

One of the special features is the screw geometry developed by fischer. It significantly improves the pullout load capacity, while the higher thread pitch reduces the screw-in torque for simple and easy installation. Its unique core-milling geometry enables low edge and axial spacing and high loads without any pre-drilling. The special tip geometry makes it easy to place and insert while reducing the splitting behaviour in the base. The needlepoint even allows the screw to be placed and inserted with ease under extreme conditions such as slanted screw connections. The PowerFull II version with a cylinder head is ideal for wood on wood connections. Additional mill pockets allow the head to be neatly countersunk deep into the wood using a long bit. The countersunk head variant with mill pockets below the head is ideal for fastening steel parts to wood, preventing fixtures from being damaged by reaming.

PowerFull II in a 10 mm diameter: Pre-drill effect included

fischer offers the 10 mm-diameter PowerFull II for applications such as lateral pressure reinforcements on bearings, main and secondary beam connections, false beam edges or reinforcements on notched bearings. The screw’s geometry also differs between the available diameters of 6 and 8 mm. It has a drill tip that creates a pre-drilling effect without causing the long screws to slip, reducing the risk of splitting the wood and lowering the turning torque, for simple, quick and safe installation.

Other highlights of fischer’s screw range

fischer’s Power-Fast and Power-Full wood screws are suitable for almost any fixing task of carpenters, joiners and timber construction specialists. Different versions with various drives, heads, thread and material variants and sizes were specially designed to process wood in all its shapes and sizes, utilising the material to the fullest extent. Screw tips and thread geometries tailored to fastening projects make installation quicker and easier, allowing processing in soft and solid woods without pre-drilling in accordance with the ETA. This requires minimum time, effort and battery power. The ETA also regulates the alternative use of tangential impact screw drivers. The screws additionally enable gap-free and non-splintering installation close to the edge. fischer’s chipboard screw Power-Fast II can be used for all types of wood on wood and metal on wood connections as well as in fischer plastic plugs with verified loads. The new adjusting screw FAFS meanwhile is ideal for the infinitely adjustable installation of wood slats or frames on timber substructures. Safe designs with fischer WOOD-FIX

The WOOD-FIX module in fischer’s free FiXperience design software allows planners and processors to create and print verifiable proof for any applications and projects with PowerFull II and other fischer screws. In addition to its simple and intuitive interface, the programme offers a clear 2D or 3D display as well as automatic error recognition if incorrect geometric limiting conditions are entered. The designs are carried out in accordance with the European Technical Assessment (ETA) or DIN EN 1995-1-1 (Eurocode EC5), including a free choice of national application documents (NAD).

The industry’s comments on International Hardware Fair Italy 2023 Michele Taddei, Sales Director of Bossong spa

“We are now an historical presence at the Cologne Fair: at EISENWARENMESSE we are very much at home. When the opportunity to participate in the first edition of International Hardware Fair Italy in Bergamo came up, we took it immediately, precisely because of the success of the Cologne fair over all these years. Here in Bergamo, we experienced a similar spirit of internationality in the building sector that exists in Germany. The size of the fair was, of course, smaller, but Italy responded very positively to our expectations.”

Franco Morganti, CEO of Morganti spa Kapriol

“From our perspective, the impression of this first edition of International Hardware Fair Italy is definitely positive; for us, it is a successful event, which has met and exceeded our expectations. The event, particularly for the number of visitors and the high profile of the exhibiting companies, is a not to be missed appointment also for future editions. And it will certainly be counted among the most important trade fairs on the European scene.”

Luca Paccagnella, General Director of Helvi spa

“We are very satisfied with Helvi participation in the first edition of International Hardware Fair Italy; this international specialised event was very well attended and generated a lot of interest.”

Petra Pott-Zemanova, General Manager MPS Sägen GmbH

“The success of the exhibition was very pleasing for our company. The exhibition was very well organised and fully met our expectations.”
