  • Bulten enters into agreement to acquire Exim & Mfr Holdings Pte Ltd

Posted in Acquisitions, Fasteners manufacturers on Jul 10, 2023

Bulten has entered into an agreement to acquire all shares in Exim & Mfr Holdings Pte Ltd “Exim”, an Asian, Singapore-based distributor of fasteners and other components, for a purchase sum of approximately SGD 66.3 million (SEK 530 million) on a cash-free and debt-free basis. The acquisition affords Bulten a good platform to grow in new sectors, where the distribution stage is a pivotal sales channel.

The acquisition is expected to contribute to Bulten’s development and earnings, and to increase earnings per share. Exim gives Bulten access to a large, broad customer base in growth sectors in a dynamic region. The acquisition is an important part of Bulten’s strategy, which aims for growth outside of the company’s primary customer group of automotive, and to improve risk diversification, as well as margins.

Anders Nyström, President and CEO of Bulten Group, comments: “Our strategy sets out a clear focus on balancing our sales through growth in customer groups beyond the automotive industry. The aim is for these to account for at least 20% of sales by 2025. The acquisition of Exim takes us into the distribution stage, which is a key to profitable growth in new sectors. Exim is a well-managed company with an international customer base and developed processes for distribution and Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI), which is suitable for industries with completely different purchasing patterns than Bulten has historically been used to. Exim’s base in Singapore is also highly attractive. It enables us to take advantage of the strong growth in that region, and we also see potential in using Exim’s sales network to increase sales for our factories in China and Taiwan. Exim will, together with Bulten's rapidly growing business to consumer electronics customers, constitute the beginning of a new industrial segment.”

    Background

Exim & Mfr Holdings Pte Ltd is a privately owned company based in Singapore. Established in 1982, the company distributes fasteners and other c-parts*, along with related services from more than 1,800 manufacturers and suppliers for American, European, Indian and Japanese companies operating in Asia. The company has more than 1,000 customers in a range of sectors including telecom, electronics, energy, medical technology, aviation, and other industrial manufacturing. Exim has approximately 140 employees in Singapore, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam, and annual sales of about SGD 40 million (SEK 320 million).

    Purchase sum and completion

The purchase sum is approximately SGD 66.3 million (SEK 530 million) on a cash-free and debtfree basis. The sum will be paid in cash with equal financing from an existing credit facility with Svenska Handelsbanken and an additional loan from the Swedish Export Credit Corporation. The acquisition is expected to be completed during Q3 2023. The transaction cost is estimated at SEK 8 million.

KPMG, Drew & Napier, and Setterwalls are acting as advisers to Bulten in connection with the acquisition.

Access to the shares is expected to take place on August 31, 2023, taking into account the fulfillment of customary conditions according to the transfer agreement.

    * Components with a low unit price that manufacturing companies stock in large quantities. Questions related to the entered agreement regarding the acquisition can be asked at Bulten’s presentation of the Q2 result on July 12.

  • BUMAX continues to deliver fasteners that are out of this world

Posted in Aerospace fasteners, Fasteners manufacturers, Industry 4.0, Innovation on May 15, 2023

[Åshammar, Sweden, May 12, 2023.] Specialist fastener manufacturer BUMAX has been selected to provide crucial fasteners to be used on the International Space Station (ISS). BUMAX 88 fasteners will be used to secure a new payload going to the ISS to measure the speed of sound.

BUMAX premium fasteners include some of the strongest in the world and are being used in a variety of extremely demanding and cutting-edge scientific applications, such as at the scientific research institute CERN in Switzerland and for the world’s largest optical telescope in northern Chile.

The space sector continues to benefit from the BUMAX fastener range with various applications. BUMAX extra strong and fatigue resistant model 88 has been selected to securely fasten the housing of a new payload on the ISS called Granular Sound.

The customer is OHB System AG, a subsidiary of the European space and technology group OHB SE, under contract of the European Space Agency (ESA). OHB SE is a European multinational technology corporation. Headquartered in Bremen, Germany, the corporation consists of the three business divisions: Space Systems, Aerospace and Digital. At present, OHB is the third largest corporation in Europe's space sector.

”To avoid glass balls flying around the ISS”

Granular Sound is an experiment in space to measure the speed of sound through a cube filled with glass balls (a so-called package) in microgravity at different package pressures. The experiment uses thousands of glass balls to simulate granular media like sand or concrete.

“The housing of this package will be securely fastened by BUMAX 88 fasteners to avoid the balls from flying around the ISS,” said Lukas Pfeiffer, Project Manager & Systems Engineer at OHB System AG. “The microgravity experiment will provide valuable data for various terrestrial and space applications – from more effective concrete processing to 3D printing in space or on the moon.”

The enhanced properties of BUMAX 88 fasteners are achieved through a combination of unique BUMAX manufacturing processes and the highest quality European steel.

    Monitoring air quality for astronauts

Since January 2022, BUMAX 88 screws have also been used for the ANITA-2 trace gas monitoring system to ensure good air quality for the ISS astronauts. The system has been simultaneously measuring more than 40 gases every six minutes on the ISS. The system was developed by OHB System AG. BUMAX 88 screws were used for the ANITA-2 payload to securely seal a safety containment and fasten crucial optical components.

“Being trusted with supplying fasteners for projects such as CERN and ISS, which are essential to the evolution of mankind, is of course a source of immense pride and a testament to the quality of our products and BUMAX as a whole,” said Lars Holm, Managing Director, BUMAX. “Being chosen again and again for the most demanding applications means that all our existing and new customers can rest assured that they are getting the best of the best.

The International Space Station was launched in 1998 to gain more knowledge about space. It is crewed by up to seven people. The ISS orbits the Earth at an altitude of 400 kilometers and a speed of 28,000 km/h, which means it orbits the Earth every 90 minutes.

  • EV Fasteners for Batteries

Posted in Industry 4.0, Innovation on Feb 17, 2023

    EV-Batteries-Blog-Image.jpeg

Alongside an estimated 6 million EV car shipments by the end of 2022, manufacturers find themselves tasked with developing ever-evolving battery technology. As range, heat and lightweighting concerns still pervade the market, manufacturers are completely rethinking the structure, design and makeup of their batteries.

As of this year, some companies have found ways to build EV fuel cells into the car’s frame itself. Aiming to increase range and decrease cost, revolutionising the structure of the battery saves space for more fuel cells and makes for a roomier interior for passengers.

Other businesses are focusing on SSBs, or solid-state batteries. Seen as a safer and more efficient option than their lithium-ion counterparts, some EV manufacturers are aiming to produce their SSBs for market introduction within the next five years. Aside from more established companies, many EV startups are also revolutionising the market, with one business boasting the development of a battery that charges in just a few minutes.

It’s well known that the production of EV batteries is expensive, but heat and lightweighting issues are also hindering these business’ product optimisation. Range anxiety is also still a problem, but the best solution isn’t necessarily creating a bigger battery. Leading to what is known in the industry as the ‘weight spiral’, creating a bigger battery would require bigger brakes, bigger wheels, and a stronger structure. EVs also tend to be much heavier than their petrol or diesel counterparts, which can negatively impact their emission levels through tyre wear and even impinge on the car’s safety.

Internal and external heat can also have a very negative impact on battery performance. An EV’s driving range can decrease by 17% in hot weather, and up to 41% in cold weather. Not only this, but studies have shown that the use of electric vehicles in hot weather can significantly decrease battery health, diminishing its lifetime.

Both these issues contribute to customers’ potential range anxiety, rendering them apprehensive about investing in an electric vehicle. It’s crucial, then, that battery manufacturers prioritise solutions to their heat and lightweighting issues.

    How Optimas can help

For all EV manufacturers, it’s important to use the correct, high-quality C-Class components and fasteners. EV fasteners may only account for 1% of your project budget, but they can make up nearly 50% of your product’s parts, so it’s important you choose the right ones.

Here at Optimas, not only do we have an industry-leading product range, but we’re experts in all things EV. We know that with greater electrification, comes a greater need for insulation. To avoid depleting battery performance, it’s crucial that manufacturers prioritise thermal insulation in the initial design stage to avoid both internal over-heating and damage done by external conditions.

Here are just a few products from our range of EV fasteners and C-Class Components that are ideal for providing insulation and eliminating unwanted thermal conductivity:

    • Nylon Machine Screws
    • Double Ended Studs with Hex Collar and Black Xylan Insulation
    • Braided Sleeving
    • Heat Shrink Tubing
    • Gland Plates

The smallest parts can also have the biggest impact on weight. Even down to EV fasteners, it’s important you prioritise using light-weight materials at every opportunity. Using materials like aluminium, magnesium and titanium can massively reduce the weight of an EV battery. Not only this, but changing the geometry of a fastener can reduce weight by as much as 35%. At Optimas, we have a team of global fastener engineers who can work with you to improve your product’s performance.

To find out more about products, or to speak to one of our experts, you can do so here. Partner with us to optimise your products and meet demand.

Kloten/Switzerland. Security is of utmost importance in the entire supply chain! Reliable processes play a significant role, especially in times of capacity and supply bottlenecks as well as rising transport and energy costs. At its Kloten site, WISAR, Wyser + Anliker AG relies on the intelligent supply solutions of Würth Industrie Service GmbH & Co. KG to perfectly connect all processes. The scale system iSCALE has been successfully deployed since August 2022 for digital storage management and uninterrupted replenishment within the production supply. Measuring the weight, the system notifies the requirements of production materials and other small parts digitally - from the customer’s point of use directly to the ERP system of Würth Industrie Service and, thus ensures exact replenishment. With the system being transferred from pilot phase to regular operation, WISAR now secures an almost independent logistical storage management for C-Parts.

WISAR – pioneer in housing technology

WISAR, Wyser + Anliker AG was founded in 1961 by Cäsar Wyser and Claire Anliker in Zurich Seebach. With around 60 employees, the family business is in its third generation and has established itself as a pioneer in the field of housing technology at its Zurich-Kloten site. The wide product range is aimed at customers in the fields of installation and building services, industry/mechanical engineering as well as telecommunications and transport technology. Whether aluminium switch cabinets ALS, various aluminium or chrome steel housings for indoor and outdoor use, switch cabinet accessories or innovative products of WISAR 19-inch technology: with high-quality products “made in Switzerland”, the company has established itself with more than 60 years of experience.

    Initial situation:

High process and procurement costs** While the main objective of the industry is to increase productivity and reduce process costs, it should also focus on improving quality and increasing flexibility. Even though C-Parts represent a small proportion of the purchase volume of the company, the procurement efforts involved here are high. Hence, the potential for saving lies in optimising the processes. This is exactly where the supply solutions for the automated production supply of Würth Industrie Service at WISAR come into picture. The housing technology specialist had already relied on a scale system for storage management. It is the flexible and self-sufficient use of the sensor-controlled scale iSCALE that led the company to rely on the innovative system portfolio of Würth Industrie Service.

    The solution: iSCALE

Secure in material supply, cost-efficient in handling. iSCALE is a sensor-controlled scale, which is directly connected with the Kanban bin and is independently movable. As a result, it can be used flexibly in the industrial environment: be it at the assembly line, material storage, Kanban storage location or directly at the workplace. iSCALE handles the logistical storage management of C-Parts almost on its own. Würth Industrie Service offers sensor-controlled weighing technology for the traditional Kanban material storage as well as for seamless supply to the exact place of requirement in the line and directly to the individual assembly stations. This flexible and independent application in the actual place of use is only possible because the system is operated without power and is controlled via new radio technology (NB-IOT). The Kanban bin W-KLT®2.0 (Würth small load carrier 2.0) is equipped with a sensor-controlled scale, which continuously checks the weight inside the bin directly at the customer’s location and transfers it via an encrypted interface to the ERP system of the C-Parts provider. Once the weight goes below a defined value, a notification is sent automatically to Würth Industrie Service, whereby the scale system automatically determines the optimal time for an order according to the requirement. Once an order is triggered, a subsequent delivery is initiated – the entire process is seamless. The scale system is designed for all the bin sizes of Würth Industrie Service following the VDA norm (2115, 4115, 4315, 4315). Roman Anliker, General Manager at WISAR, Wyser + Anliker AG, highlights the advantages that WISAR expects from the digital storage management system: “A fully-automated logistical stock management replaces the cumbersome stock-takings, re-orders and interim storage. As the inventory is continuously audited, any fluctuations and peaks can be identified in time, and thus the supply security can be maximised.” The storage locations were adapted within two days by a team of three employees of Würth Industrie Service. Over 100 sensor-controlled scales were implemented in different bin sizes 2115, 4115 and 4315 at the Kloten site. At WISAR, the storage management is carried out through the traditional Kanban material storage. A centralised storage location with three Kanban racks ensures that the required fasteners are stored securely as per the requirements and, reordered accordingly in the production of the housing technology expert.

1.jpg WISAR relies on the scale system iSCALE of Würth Industrie Service for reporting and reordering the requirements of production materials and other small parts based on weight.

In doing so, WISAR benefits from the process being economised significantly by reducing the tied-up capital, since high inventory levels can be reduced at customer’s location, and thereby, areas for storage spaces. With iSCALE, it is possible to deliver to the centralised storage locations as well as seamlessly supply to the exact place of requirement and the individual assembly station. In this way, the C-Parts management partner offers an additional solution within the production and operating materials supply, using which the users can further digitalise their entire delivery chain and make it more transparent.

  • Bulten closes manufacturing plant in the UK

Posted in Fasteners manufacturers, Industry 4.0 on Dec 15, 2022

In order to streamline the operation and improve profitability, Bulten has decided to close its manufacturing plant in Pembroke, UK. The closure means that 50 jobs are at risk of redundancy.

The closing-down process will begin with immediate effect, and the plan is to complete the process during the second quarter of 2023. Total restructuring costs amount to approximately SEK 11 million, of which SEK 9 million are reserved for the current year. There will be additional investments totaling about SEK 12 million in connection with the closure. These primarily relate to relocation of equipment and production to Bulten’s other manufacturing plants, along with a few new recruitments.

“It is unfortunately difficult to achieve profitability with the mix of products made in Pembroke, and also volumes are relatively low. By moving the parts of production that have long-term potential to our other plants, we can achieve better efficiency and thereby higher profitability. This is in line with our strategy, which includes better utilization of our production network,” says Anders Nyström, President and CEO of Bulten Group.

The operation in Pembroke became part of Bulten Group in 2020 with the acquisition of PSM International. Fifty people are currently employed at the plant, manufacturing and purchasing fasteners for different industrial segments. Bulten’s other operations in the UK will not be affected by the closure of the Pembroke plant.
