Bad Mergentheim/Main-Tauber-Kreis. At the sixth Expert forum C-Parts management, distinguished keynote speakers from industry, trade, science and consulting ensured a top-class exchange. On Tuesday, 13th June and Wednesday, 14th June 2023, 350 participants from 7 countries gathered together in the Würth Industrial Park in Bad Mergentheim at Würth Industrie Service GmbH & Co. KG to discuss trends, innovations and global challenges in the industry.

    1.jpg

“Since our first expert forum in 2017, we have welcomed over 2,400 guests from across Germany and all over the world to our company location in Bad Mergentheim. The focus is on exchanging valuable ideas on solutions for a secure, resilient supply of production and operating materials as well as on significant impulses on market trends and global challenges. This not only results in intensive discussions, valuable business networks and long-term collaborations, but also in customer-oriented innovations. In this way, we ensure that our customers have their focus on the future.," says Martin Jauss, CEO of Würth Industrie Service GmbH & Co. KG.

In the face of Industry 4.0, the companies have to deal with changing markets. It is no longer just automation and digitalisation that concern the industry. There are also global issues across all countries and continents: the ongoing effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, a volatile situation in the procurement markets, climate change and raw material shortages, geopolitical disputes, increasing inflation and a worsening shortage of qualified employees. Leading experts from industry, trade, science and consulting talked about the steps that need to be taken to be able cope with these developments at this year's expert forum. While Univ. Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. mult. Horst Wildemann, TCW Management GmbH & Co. KG, spoke about the importance of resilient corporate management with a special focus on its effects in the supply chain, David Reger, CEO & Founder at Neura Robotics GmbH, took up another important topic in his lecture on "Cognitive robots – a new era of human-machine collaboration”, where he focused on the future of a new, changed world of work. A world of work in which man and machine work successfully hand in hand. Prof. Dipl. Inf. Univ., MBA, Dominik B.O. Learning from the experts: a holistic approach to C-Parts management.

With intelligent system solutions, Würth Industrie Service implements optimal supply concepts for production materials as well as for auxiliary and operating materials such as occupational safety, tools or chemical items. Not only does this reduce the procurement effort, optimise processes and reduce costs, but also achieves maximum time savings with maximum delivery reliability and the lowest possible capital commitment. The participants were able to experience how this can be achieved live on site at an accompanying technical exhibition. One of the absolute highlights: The Smart Workplace. With Smart Workplace, walking unnecessarily, searching for parts and manually tracking the requirements are now things of the past! In the assembly workplace of the future, man and machine work hand in hand.  Thanks to numerous options for individual workplace design in combination with connected, intelligent supply solutions, driverless transport systems and worker assistance systems, the C-Parts supply of the future is a success. CPS®miSELF, intelligent solution for digital supply management, proves how A-, B- and C-Parts can also be managed with just one system. It enables industrial customers to combine different suppliers in a single solution and tried and tested hardware while at the same time using the service of Würth Industrie Service for items outside the Würth product range. Just pure innovation! Also during a tour of the logistics at one of the most modern logistics centres for industrial supply in Europe, the participants were able to get a personalised insight into the implementation of automation and digitalisation on an area of more than 65,000 square metres. At this year's Expert forum C-Parts management too, promising innovations were brought to the fore and the participants were able to make valuable contacts and establish networks. Now, true to the motto “Designing the future together”, it is a matter of actively taking charge of it. Because innovators do not wait for change, they drive it.

The industry’s comments on International Hardware Fair Italy 2023 Michele Taddei, Sales Director of Bossong spa

“We are now an historical presence at the Cologne Fair: at EISENWARENMESSE we are very much at home. When the opportunity to participate in the first edition of International Hardware Fair Italy in Bergamo came up, we took it immediately, precisely because of the success of the Cologne fair over all these years. Here in Bergamo, we experienced a similar spirit of internationality in the building sector that exists in Germany. The size of the fair was, of course, smaller, but Italy responded very positively to our expectations.”

Franco Morganti, CEO of Morganti spa Kapriol

“From our perspective, the impression of this first edition of International Hardware Fair Italy is definitely positive; for us, it is a successful event, which has met and exceeded our expectations. The event, particularly for the number of visitors and the high profile of the exhibiting companies, is a not to be missed appointment also for future editions. And it will certainly be counted among the most important trade fairs on the European scene.”

Luca Paccagnella, General Director of Helvi spa

“We are very satisfied with Helvi participation in the first edition of International Hardware Fair Italy; this international specialised event was very well attended and generated a lot of interest.”

Petra Pott-Zemanova, General Manager MPS Sägen GmbH

“The success of the exhibition was very pleasing for our company. The exhibition was very well organised and fully met our expectations.”

  • BUMAX continues to deliver fasteners that are out of this world

Posted in Aerospace fasteners, Fasteners manufacturers, Industry 4.0, Innovation on May 15, 2023

[Åshammar, Sweden, May 12, 2023.] Specialist fastener manufacturer BUMAX has been selected to provide crucial fasteners to be used on the International Space Station (ISS). BUMAX 88 fasteners will be used to secure a new payload going to the ISS to measure the speed of sound.

BUMAX premium fasteners include some of the strongest in the world and are being used in a variety of extremely demanding and cutting-edge scientific applications, such as at the scientific research institute CERN in Switzerland and for the world’s largest optical telescope in northern Chile.

The space sector continues to benefit from the BUMAX fastener range with various applications. BUMAX extra strong and fatigue resistant model 88 has been selected to securely fasten the housing of a new payload on the ISS called Granular Sound.

The customer is OHB System AG, a subsidiary of the European space and technology group OHB SE, under contract of the European Space Agency (ESA). OHB SE is a European multinational technology corporation. Headquartered in Bremen, Germany, the corporation consists of the three business divisions: Space Systems, Aerospace and Digital. At present, OHB is the third largest corporation in Europe's space sector.

    International Space Station.jpg

”To avoid glass balls flying around the ISS”

Granular Sound is an experiment in space to measure the speed of sound through a cube filled with glass balls (a so-called package) in microgravity at different package pressures. The experiment uses thousands of glass balls to simulate granular media like sand or concrete.

“The housing of this package will be securely fastened by BUMAX 88 fasteners to avoid the balls from flying around the ISS,” said Lukas Pfeiffer, Project Manager & Systems Engineer at OHB System AG. “The microgravity experiment will provide valuable data for various terrestrial and space applications – from more effective concrete processing to 3D printing in space or on the moon.”

The enhanced properties of BUMAX 88 fasteners are achieved through a combination of unique BUMAX manufacturing processes and the highest quality European steel.

    Monitoring air quality for astronauts

Since January 2022, BUMAX 88 screws have also been used for the ANITA-2 trace gas monitoring system to ensure good air quality for the ISS astronauts. The system has been simultaneously measuring more than 40 gases every six minutes on the ISS. The system was developed by OHB System AG. BUMAX 88 screws were used for the ANITA-2 payload to securely seal a safety containment and fasten crucial optical components.

“Being trusted with supplying fasteners for projects such as CERN and ISS, which are essential to the evolution of mankind, is of course a source of immense pride and a testament to the quality of our products and BUMAX as a whole,” said Lars Holm, Managing Director, BUMAX. “Being chosen again and again for the most demanding applications means that all our existing and new customers can rest assured that they are getting the best of the best.

The International Space Station was launched in 1998 to gain more knowledge about space. It is crewed by up to seven people. The ISS orbits the Earth at an altitude of 400 kilometers and a speed of 28,000 km/h, which means it orbits the Earth every 90 minutes.

  • EV Fasteners for Batteries

Posted in Industry 4.0, Innovation on Feb 17, 2023

    EV-Batteries-Blog-Image.jpeg

Alongside an estimated 6 million EV car shipments by the end of 2022, manufacturers find themselves tasked with developing ever-evolving battery technology. As range, heat and lightweighting concerns still pervade the market, manufacturers are completely rethinking the structure, design and makeup of their batteries.

As of this year, some companies have found ways to build EV fuel cells into the car’s frame itself. Aiming to increase range and decrease cost, revolutionising the structure of the battery saves space for more fuel cells and makes for a roomier interior for passengers.

Other businesses are focusing on SSBs, or solid-state batteries. Seen as a safer and more efficient option than their lithium-ion counterparts, some EV manufacturers are aiming to produce their SSBs for market introduction within the next five years. Aside from more established companies, many EV startups are also revolutionising the market, with one business boasting the development of a battery that charges in just a few minutes.

It’s well known that the production of EV batteries is expensive, but heat and lightweighting issues are also hindering these business’ product optimisation. Range anxiety is also still a problem, but the best solution isn’t necessarily creating a bigger battery. Leading to what is known in the industry as the ‘weight spiral’, creating a bigger battery would require bigger brakes, bigger wheels, and a stronger structure. EVs also tend to be much heavier than their petrol or diesel counterparts, which can negatively impact their emission levels through tyre wear and even impinge on the car’s safety.

Internal and external heat can also have a very negative impact on battery performance. An EV’s driving range can decrease by 17% in hot weather, and up to 41% in cold weather. Not only this, but studies have shown that the use of electric vehicles in hot weather can significantly decrease battery health, diminishing its lifetime.

Both these issues contribute to customers’ potential range anxiety, rendering them apprehensive about investing in an electric vehicle. It’s crucial, then, that battery manufacturers prioritise solutions to their heat and lightweighting issues.

    How Optimas can help

For all EV manufacturers, it’s important to use the correct, high-quality C-Class components and fasteners. EV fasteners may only account for 1% of your project budget, but they can make up nearly 50% of your product’s parts, so it’s important you choose the right ones.

Here at Optimas, not only do we have an industry-leading product range, but we’re experts in all things EV. We know that with greater electrification, comes a greater need for insulation. To avoid depleting battery performance, it’s crucial that manufacturers prioritise thermal insulation in the initial design stage to avoid both internal over-heating and damage done by external conditions.

Here are just a few products from our range of EV fasteners and C-Class Components that are ideal for providing insulation and eliminating unwanted thermal conductivity:

    • Nylon Machine Screws
    • Double Ended Studs with Hex Collar and Black Xylan Insulation
    • Braided Sleeving
    • Heat Shrink Tubing
    • Gland Plates

The smallest parts can also have the biggest impact on weight. Even down to EV fasteners, it’s important you prioritise using light-weight materials at every opportunity. Using materials like aluminium, magnesium and titanium can massively reduce the weight of an EV battery. Not only this, but changing the geometry of a fastener can reduce weight by as much as 35%. At Optimas, we have a team of global fastener engineers who can work with you to improve your product’s performance.

  • fischer launches a world first in construction monitoring

Posted in Fasteners manufacturers, Industry 4.0, Innovation, Sustainability on Nov 22, 2022

    Intelligent safety monitoring

fischer is the world’s first company in fastening technology to offer an intelligent and integrated monitoring solution for constructions and facilities. The solution increases the overall flow of information, service life, sustainability and safety of constructions and facilities while ensuring higher maintenance efficiency.

The sensor-integrated fixing products SensorAnchor and SensorDisc provide users with a time and resource-saving method to identify current acting forces in fastenings. The products transfer the wireless data to the Construction Monitoring module of the myfischer portal, allowing the information to be accessed via web applications on a tablet, PC or laptop or on a smartphone with the construction site-friendly fischer PRO ap.

Secure connections, intelligent interconnection Thanks to intelligent force monitoring of fastenings, threshold violations and problems can be identified early on in order to take measures, significantly increasing the level of safety. The flow of information reduces the level of complexity, increasing the efficiency of maintaining constructions and facilities. Maintenance intervals are either extended or avoided entirely. The service life of constructions and facilities is extended, which simultaneously increases sustainability.

SensorAnchor: Monitor forces from a distance A secure anchorage must be guaranteed for countless applications, including rollercoaster support legs, scaffolds and other steel structures, industrial robots anchored to the floor or suspended ventilation systems and other installations in tunnel construction. Additional applications include noise barriers, climbing formwork on high-rise constructions, seismic bracing, high-voltage power line fixings and much more. fischer’s new SensorAnchor enables the permanent and intelligent monitoring of the absolute values of a fixing’s preload and operational forces.

The product consists of an anchor rod with an integrated sensor that allows forces to be measured directly in the fastening (flux). In order to read the measured values, the SensorAnchor is continuously connected to the battery or mains-powered SensorGateway, which transfers the encrypted data to the fischer cloud in a defined cycle through a wireless standard developed specifically for the Internet of Things (NB-IoT).

Preload and operational forces are continuously monitored in real time and sent to the Construction Monitoring software application. In order to read the current measurement, the SensorGateway that requires checking is simply accessed via the app before the connected anchor is selected. If the defined force exceeds or falls below the threshold values, a push notification is immediately sent to the smartphone or browser.

The SensorAnchor is made of highly corrosion-resistant stainless steel and is available in all sizes of M16 and above. Up to four anchors can be monitored per gateway. IP67 protection for the electronics in addition to the shock and impact-resistant Gateway housing provide additional safety during construction and industrial applications.

SensorDisc: Scan forces with a smartphone In addition to the SensorAnchor, fischer is also launching its SensorDisc, a washer for the long-term monitoring of preload force levels of standard screw connections. The measurement is provided at the time of the reading. In order to enable monitoring, the product made of highly corrosion-resistant stainless steel is equipped with a measurement and readout sensor as well as an antenna. No additional hardware is required. The measured value is the preload level percentage in relation to the installation state.

Data is transferred using contactless technology and can be accessed via the fischer PRO app using a standard smartphone. The SensorDisc can be used for years thanks to its battery-free, fully passive electronics. Energy is generated via the electric field produced by the reading device and is used to supply the system. If the SensorDisc is touched with a smartphone, this transfers the energy field to the disc, which is then used to measure the current force in the screw connection and report the measured value back to the mobile device. In order to see the remaining percentage of the original preload force, the SensorDisc simply has to be selected and scanned using the PRO app. The disc only needs to be tapped with a standard smartphone to be scanned and can be repeatedly loosened, disassembled and reused in another location.

The washer is available in sizes M16 and above with no upper limit. SensorDisc applications include wind turbines, crane runways, concrete formwork and flange joints on pipe systems, such as on process engineering or petrochemical production plants.
